Diode Laser and IPL Hair Removal

At the Boca Institute of Dermatology, we use both Diode Laser Hair Removal and IPL Hair Removal. Each offer lasting results and reduction of hair regrowth- we’ll discuss each and their differences below.

Diode Laser Hair Removal: We use a Spectrum 810nm Diode Laser. “Diode lasers use a single wavelength of light that has a high abruption rate in melanin. As the melanin heats up it destroys the root and blood flow to the follicle disabling the hair growth permanently” (Cosmeditech.com).

  • No Down Time
  • Fastest Results
  • All Skin Types and skin tones
  • No Discomfort: Diode lasers are cooled, so there will be less heat given off than IPL. I have had NO PAIN or discomfort with diode laser hair removal, the only time it’s uncomfortable is if you don’t get a close shave.

At home “laser” devices such as Tria have a small surface area and do not emit the same wavelength as a professional device-I can’t imagine treating large areas as it would be too time consuming whereas a professional treatment would take minutes for incomparable results.

IPL Hair Removal: IPL’s multiple wavelengths are focused in 4 broad band filters, which are non-ablative and gentle. I can tell you personally that it does work- every follicle was pink after treatment and I’d see square patches where hair didn’t regrow.
I have used HPL (Home Pulse Light) devices such as the Silk’N SenseEpil, and while they did provide similar results, they were not lasting as it’s almost impossible to treat each cycle with such devices, but they may help supplement professional treatments. Furthermore, the cost of replacing the tips is so expensive you might as well get a professional treatment (Cosmeditech.com).

  • Suited to lighter and Medium skin tones.
  • Discomfort: there can be more heat generated and given off by IPL than Diode lasers, which are cooled, but we use a cool gel to minimize any discomfort. I would say that IPL can sting or burn if the gel runs out- Diode laser does not hurt at all unless the hair is not shaved close.

The key to any type of permanent hair reduction is consistency- hair grows in cycles, and in order to achieve truly permanent hair reduction, you must treat each cycle, which means getting IPL Hair Removal or Laser Hair Removal treatments regularly.
